Current Unit: Writing and Life
In these units, each student will be writing about issues that concern him or her personally, using background reading to enhance understanding of his or her topic.
More specific information about each unit can be found on the pages below.
Walter Dean Myers's popular 1989 novel explores life in inner-city Harlem as we see Jamal, a streetwise twelve-year-old, struggle with poverty, bullying, and pressure to join a gang. While we read, students will study and research issues important to modern-day middle-schoolers and write about them.
We will be conducting a structured writing workshop. Writing topics will be related to some element of the school curriculum in any subject. Students will participate in individual revision and editing, peer writing groups, and student-teacher conferences, and will synthesize that feedback into a writing project on the topic and in the genre of their choice.
