Placement Test Policy and Guidelines

Certain Language and Literature.com classes require placement exams, whether based on the discretion of the teacher or on the intiative of the parent who wishes to know if a class is appropriate for his or her child. The goal of placement tests is to provide information for making the best judgment about how prepared a student is to enter an advanced class. In order to make sure that your child receives the most comprehensive assessment possible, please read the policy and guidelines below.

Schedule a test period with Mrs. Hogye during the summer by calling or e-mailing her. There is a regular session fee for a placement test ($22), but if your child is accepted into the class and registered for the upcoming year, that fee will be applied to the fall registration and deducted from the total. (If the student's registration is later withdrawn, the placement test fee is non-refundable.) Test sessions usually last 1 1/2 to 2 hours, depending on the subject.

Bring the child's previous year's textbook, if possible. This will allow the teacher to determine at what level the student was performing at the end of the last school year and to what material the student has been exposed.

If applying for a literature class, bring a recent writing sample that your child has completed for an English or writing class. This can be a story, essay, or project that you feel represents your child's typical level of performance.
