Overview: In Latin III, students integrate and extend their knowledge of the language from Latin I and Latin II by delving into literature of the late Republic and early Empire. The first two thirds of the year are spent reading Vergil's Aeneid in Latin and English translation, and the last third studying selections from Ovid's Metamorphoses and Amores. As they read, students learn the details of Latin poetic meter, literary and rhetorical devices, and the works' historical and mythological contexts. Prose composition practice will also continue in Latin III. Students are encouraged to take the Latin III-Poetry National Latin Exam in the spring.
