Latin II
Levels: Middle and high school. (Grades 7-12)
Prerequisites: Latin I or equivalent.
Dates and Times: Wednesdays and Fridays, 11:00-12:30 a.m.
Duration: 63 sessions (29 fall / 34 spring), beginning September 7 and ending May 5 (with breaks for holidays).
Location: Mrs. Hogye's house.
Required Texts: Wheelock's Latin, 6th edition; Workbook for Wheelock's Latin, 3rd edition; The New College Latin & English Dictionary.
Overview: This class is geared specifically toward middle- and high-school students who have already completed a typical first-year high-school Latin course. (See syllabus on Latin I course page for the extent of a first-year class.) Students should also possess a strong working knowledge of English grammar and independent study skills. The Latin II course continues in the Wheelock's textbook where Latin I left off, adding to the student's knowledge of Latin grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and syntax. The goal of Latin II, however, is to move beyond the study of the mechanics of the language into an understanding of Latin as literature; therefore, students will also translate long passages by ancient authors, including Julius Caesar, Livy, and Pliny. Throughout the year, we will also examine the historical and cultural background of the Roman Empire, with an eye toward its impact on modern Western civilization, through historical projects, etymology investigations, and more. Students are encouraged to take the Latin II National Latin Exam in the spring.
