Latin I
Levels: Middle and high school. (Grades 7-12)
Prerequisites: None. Students should possess independent study skills.
Dates and Times: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1:00-2:30 p.m.
Duration: 63 sessions (29 fall / 34 spring), beginning September 7 and ending May 5 (with breaks for holidays).
Location: Mrs. Hogye's house.
Required Texts: Wheelock's Latin, 6th edition; Workbook for Wheelock's Latin, 3rd edition.
Overview: This class is geared specifically toward middle- and high-school students who will be starting Latin for the first time or who have had only a brief introduction to the language. Any 6th-grade student who has a strong working knowledge of English grammar and experience with independent study skills is also welcome. The course covers a typical first-year high-school curriculum in Latin. Wheelock's is a concise, advanced textbook (and may be reused in Latin II and III), so it will be supplemented with other readings, historical background, and information on Roman culture and mythology. Students will learn the basics of Latin grammar and vocabulary, with a strong emphasis on translation skills and writing basic Latin sentences. We will also pursue projects throughout the year, including maps of the Roman Empire, retellings of myths, etymology investigations, and more. Students are encouraged to take the National Latin Exam in the spring.
