About L&LKellan Hogye, a former public-school teacher, began teaching independently in 2004 in order to provide high-quality upper-level English literature and Latin instruction to the Northern Virginia homeschool community. The purpose of the courses at LLIHC is to challenge students in their study of Latin or English to excel in general knowledge of the subject as well as analytical writing and critical thinking skills. While both the English literature and the Latin courses cover the basics of middle- and high-school curricula, they are also grounded in a firm historical and cultural context, inviting the interdisciplinary study of subjects such as art appreciation, music, mythology, psychology, logic, and philosophy into the core content. All courses meet and exceed the applicable Virginia State Standards of Learning, are designed for college-bound students, and cover the general content of relevant state or national standardized tests, such as the Virginia SOL Tests, the National Latin Exam, or the SAT or SAT-II, if students should choose to take them. Mrs. Hogye strives to offer small classes and individual attention to her students. She is available outside of class and is always happy to take questions over the phone or on e-mail. The goal of LLIHC classes is to instill in students a love of learning and investigating language and literature with a critical and evaluative eye. Opportunities for private tutoring of public-school students are available at convenient after-school times. Contact Mrs. Hogye at kellan@languageandlit.com if you are interested.
