About Kellan Hogye

An avid reader, writer, and musician since childhood, Kellan Hogye has chosen a career to make the most of her complementary interests in literature, languages, science, and history.

From 1997 to 2001, Mrs. Hogye pursued a bachelor's degree in English literature from the University of Virginia with a minor in Classics. Her English coursework included intensive studies in early and medieval English literature, American literature of the Industrial Revolution, the contemporary novel, and the history of the English language. Her Classics coursework included studies in Latin poetry and prose translation, Roman history and culture, and Latin prose composition.

Concurrently to her B.A. at the University of Virginia, Mrs. Hogye completed a master's degree in teaching with a certification in English and Language Arts, grades 6-12, studying instructional and assessment strategies, and integration of technology and instruction. She graduated in 2002 at the top of her class (B.A. and M.T.), the recipient of the Shannon Award for Excellence in Education, from the Curry School of Education at UVA. She is a member of the Raven Society, Omicron Delta Kappa, and Phi Beta Kappa.

Mrs. Hogye completed a Teaching Associateship at Monticello High School in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2001. She taught Grade 11 Honors (AP) and Academic American Literature and Creative Writing, a multi-grade elective course. After a successful semester, she returned to Monticello in the spring of 2002 to complete a master's thesis on technology and the English classroom.

Mrs. Hogye moved to Loudoun County, Virginia, in 2002 to teach Grade 7 Language Arts at Farmwell Station Middle School, where she participated in interdisciplinary teaching teams and partnered with a special-education teacher to team-teach mainstreamed special-education students. She played an active role in the school's highly regarded spring musical production, where she served as technical director, as well as facilitating her teaching team and designing and maintaining the team's website. In 2004, after two enjoyable years in the public schools, Mrs. Hogye left Farmwell Station to pursue independent teaching and continue her education. She is currently completing a state teaching certification in Latin while continuing her education in Classics.

When she is not teaching, Mrs. Hogye enjoys playing musical instruments, primarily the piano, guitar, and flute. She is a fan of folk and bluegrass music and hopes one day to take up the mandolin. Mrs. Hogye is active in her church, CrossCurrent Ministries, in Broadlands. As she is always a student of literature, her current favorites include Jose Saramago, Arundhati Roy, Tom Stoppard, and Mark Salzman, among many others. One may also find her trying to learn Hungarian and German when not traveling around Virginia for photography subjects.

Mrs. Hogye lives in Ashburn, Virginia, with her husband and children.
